Creativity makes us laugh. It moves us to tears or to take action. It can make us reflect on ourselves, or see the whole world differently. Creativity makes us want to boogie down with our bad selves. Creativity makes us feel things.

That’s why we camp out on the cold sidewalk for concert tickets and clutch our date’s hand at the scariest part of the movie. That’s why we are moved by the phrases Call Me Ishmael, Still I Rise, and Knock Knock. That’s why a splash of pigment on canvas or a hunk of carved rock can make us well up with emotion. That’s why when we say what famous symphony goes duh duh duh Duh! you not only know exactly what we’re talking about but you can hear it in your head and you can feel it in your belly. That’s why poetry.

One point of clarification: being for human creativity does not mean we are anti-technology. We have laptops. We have software. But they are tools, just like the paintbrush, the pencil, the Super 8 cam, the djembe and the Stratocaster. 

But the thing about these tools, and all tools, is that they are the vehicle and not the driver. Creativity orginates in the human mind. And the human heart.
