Who We Are
Our team at Human Intelligence® is composed of novelists, dancers, artists, musicians, writers, coders, and creators of every type and description. In fact, we believe that every human being is a creator. We celebrate and defend the intrinsic value of human-created work: We won’t allow the wonder and glory of human creativity to be diminished.
- HUMAN-CENTRIC: Two creative people with a long history in the humanities founded the Institute, and our human-centered vision is sustained by a team of talented people who share our profound passion to protect and empower human creators.
- WELCOMING: We welcome you to the movement as a full participant and collaborator. Only together will we make the world a better place for human creators. You are not a product or a unit of production whose purpose is to keep the capitalist wheel turning – you are our compatriots and fellow travelers on a mutual journey of discovery.
- OPEN MINDED: In trying to sustain their creative activity in the age of AI, many people are finding connection with their audience to be fraught and frayed. Our goal is to help you find, build, and maintain an intimate connection with your audience. We open closed doors in partnership with you, identifying solutions that fit your artistic journey; we will never impose our own ideas or prioritize our own motives.
- BOLD: The history of innovation demonstrates that we will have to push hard to create a diverse, equitable, fair, and just future for human creators. We remain optimistic about this future, and firmly believe that – together – we can build one that doesn’t diminish or dehumanize. Every voice has a place at the table, around which we will describe, envision, and enact that future together.
Who We Aren't
There’s a gold rush happening right now focused on the work of human creators. We’ve found our Institute confused for other initiatives and ideas. Here’s a brief clarification about things we are not:
TECH-CENTRIC:We follow the rule of “Humans first”: technology should serve your needs, not the other way around. We don’t privilege the needs of a technical system over the human touch
PREDATORY:We do not empower synthetic extrusion tools or generative AI companies who seek to exploit creators for their own benefit. We recognize your work and its value as belonging to you – entirely. We are not a social media or an AI company. You are not our product.
CONFUSED: We are not naive – we can see that the flood of generated content is not diminishing – it is getting more insidious. In this environment, generative tools are often anthropomorphized. We know different: we refuse to think machines are human.
COMPROMISED: We recognize that only humans can create something from nothing, and that machine-generated content is often built on IP theft and misappropriation. Every member of our team signs a pledge to reject generative AI as a replacement for genuine human work. We will never endorse replacement of a genuine human creator’s art.

Our Tools
Our team uses a variety of tools to combat the predation and destructive potential of generative AI. Every day, we are designing new tools to help you defend your rights.
Our Plan
We founded the Institute to stand as a bulwark to protect human creativity. Yet reversing the disastrous effects generative AI has taken on artists is a long game.
Our Founders
Ned Hayes’s mission is to safeguard, nurture, and protect human work. A bestselling novelist and storyteller who has lived out simultaneous careers in humanities education and technical product leadership, Ned has taught classes in the humanities for many years. He has also led teams at Adobe, Microsoft, Xerox PARC and Intel. He’s launched products lauded by major media and by millions of people around the world, yet the most satisfying work of his career has been making up stories. He studied English at Whitworth University, storytelling at the Rainier Writers’ Workshop, ethics vs. AI at UC Berkeley’s Graduate Institute, and business at Stanford University’s Graduate School of Business.
Kira Cleveland’s commitment is to preserve the wonder and fulfillment humans experience through creation and connection. She has centered her work around community, leadership, and innovation. Through decades of working with service organizations, she became proficient at synthesizing community feedback into impactful products. These strengths have served her well in her career leading product and engineering teams. The combined passions for business, dance, and the arts, led Kira to build a successful dance studio and handcrafted jewelry businesses. She can speak with authority about how the creative process enlivens and enriches creators and everyone around them.
